Welcome to the Hare BNB Rescue

Saving Bunnies One Hop At A Time

We are a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to providing compassionate care and support for rabbits in need. Our work is made possible through the generosity of donors, the services we provide, and the fundraising events that sustain our mission.

How to Help Prevent Rabbit Abandonment and Overpopulation

Start conversations with friends, family, and coworkers who may be considering an impulse purchase of a bunny. Sharing the guidance below can make a real difference in the lives of rabbits and the people who care for them.

1. Adopt from a rescue

More than 200 rabbits are currently living on the streets of the Greater Portland, Oregon area. Local rescues provide spay/neuter services and ensure bunnies are healthy and ready for safe, loving homes.

2. Foster first

Fostering a bunny—or a bonded pair—is a great way to learn whether a rabbit fits your home and lifestyle. It also helps identify potential allergies to rabbits or hay while giving you support from an experienced community.

3. Keep bunnies indoors

Outdoor housing exposes rabbits to parasites, predators, and Rabbit Hemorrhagic Disease Virus. Indoor living keeps them safe and allows their personalities to shine as they become part of the family, just like cats and dogs.

4. Provide ample space

Cages, crates, and hutches are never enough.

  • Small rabbits need at least 16+ square feet of accessible space at all times.

  • Larger rabbits and bonded pairs need 20+ square feet or more. Room to move keeps their GI tract healthy and maintains muscle tone.

5. Spay/neuter all rabbits

Unaltered rabbits are at high risk for reproductive cancers, especially after age 2–3. Spaying/neutering also prevents accidental litters—many people misidentify their rabbits’ sexes, leading to unexpected babies.

6. Litter train with a large box and plenty of hay

Most spayed/neutered rabbits litter train easily. A roomy litter box filled with hay encourages good habits, reduces mess, and gives bunnies more freedom to roam.

7. Find a bunny‑savvy veterinarian

Rabbits are considered “exotic,” and many vets only treat cats and dogs. Choose a vet experienced with rabbit health and behavior. Bunny‑savvy vets are also more likely to offer the Rabbit Hemorrhagic Disease Virus Type 2 vaccine.

8. HAY—Not carrots

Hay is the foundation of a rabbit’s diet.

  • Adult rabbits thrive on timothy, orchard grass, oat hay, and prairie grass.

  • Baby rabbits benefit from alfalfa hay. Carrots and most fruits should only be tiny, occasional treats due to their high sugar content.

9. Consider adopting a bonded pair

If you’re new to rabbits, an already‑bonded pair can be a wonderful choice. If you have a solo bunny, consider bonding once all rabbits are fixed—about 80% of altered rabbits prefer living with a companion.

10. Enjoy the journey

With proper care, spay/neuter, and unlimited fresh hay, rabbits can live 10–14 years. They bring joy, humor, and companionship to the families who welcome them into their homes.

The Hare BnB serves a large part of Washington state as well as Portland Oregon.
